From figuring out how many shots you can get on a tiny budget, to working out the mechanics behind using a washing machine for the first time, there's no denying that Freshers Week is the start of a steep learning curve.
You're probably somewhere on the scale between excitement and fear about starting university, but we are here to tell you the best ways to ensure everything goes smoothly.
We have come up with 8 top tips to ensure you survive Freshers Week!
1. Preparation is key
Read all the welcome information you get, whether that's an email, PDF or actual posted documents. It'll give you an idea on what to expect and where to find additional resources or information once you get there.
2. Arrive early
Arrive at your accommodation as soon as you can. And unpack. With so much going on over the next few weeks, it'll be reassuring to have a nice base to come back to.
3. Explore as much as you can
During the first week, the campus will be full of guides and mentors ready to help you find your way around! But after that, you'll be on your own! It's good to get a good idea of everything around you as early on as possible - like where you can get the cheapest pint!
4. Be adventurous at the Fresher's Fair
Here you get the chance to reinvent yourself by signing up to loads of different clubs and societies. It's a great way of meeting new people even if you drop out of most of them 2 months in.
5. Take Advantage of Student Deals
Pretty much any and every brand will have some kind of student discount. UNiDAYS have an app, where you can find the best deals on food and retail brands like ASOS, Dominoes and Apple. Here at Certified London, we are here to help you out too - use our student code STUDENT10 for 10% off!
Don't make the mistake of spending all your loan/budget in the first few weeks. You'll end up living off 10p noodles by the end of term! Work out a reasonable budget each week and try your best to stick to it.
7. Get On with your Flatmates
If you're in shared living, be co-operative. Make sure you clean up after yourself and contribute to keeping communal spaces clean and tidy! It's also a good idea to establish early on what is shared and what isn't, especially when it comes to food shopping - some prefer everyone to keep separate whilst other love an 'all-in' approach. Most settle on somewhere in between though! Regardless, make sure you're happy with the outcome.
8. Don't Skip Lectures or Seminars
Make sure you turn up to the ones scheduled for your first week! They'll introduce you to your course tutors, other people doing the same thing as you, and what to expect over the next coming months/years! And once the fun of Freshers Week is over, try your best to remember what you're at University for - to learn! That means turning up, even to the dreaded 9am lecture!
9. Stay Safe
Yes it's an obvious one, but keep a sensible head on you at all times, completely wasted or not. Remember to eat a meal before a night out, look after all of your belongings (especially your drink) and try to go home in numbers rather than alone!
