Brunch n Grind are Kat and Vanessa, two kick-ass bloggers who write about the best foodie hot-spots and the most exciting fitness classes in town. Here we caught up with them about all things fitness in London's Eccleston Yard where they checked out our Certified London trainers.
Certified London: Tell us about your blog Brunch n Grind?
Kat & Vanessa: We set up Brunch n Grind two years ago to share our love of brunch, fitness and yoga with like-minded Londoners. We're all about balance so there's no talk of clean eating or counting macros on our blog or social channels, we believe in living life to the full and encourage body confidence whatever your shape and size. Our main aim is to help people find a form of exercise that suits them and makes them feel good, combined with an epic brunch of course!
Certified London: What's a typical workday like for you?
Kat & Vanessa: We work together in the advertising team of a national newspaper, so we have to squeeze our brunching and grinding in around a day job. Often we'll check out a new studio in the morning before work and cover it on social media, then head to the office and at lunchtime we catch up on Brunch n Grind emails, meetings and content together. In the evenings we might be invited to a launch event for an activewear or beauty brand or if we've already worked out we go home for a long, hot bath!
Certified London: What was the first item of clothing you ever bought for yourself?
Vanessa: It has to be the classic Adidas triple stripe tracksuit bottoms, I was obsessed with them and thought if I got them, I'd look as cool as Sporty spice! I never did perfect that backflip...
Kat: Me too, it was all about Adidas in the mid-Nineties. If you didn't have a pair of trackies you just didn't fit in!
Certified London: Describe your personal style:
Vanessa: When I'm not working out, I love vintage fashion so you'll find me in sixties style dresses, tights and ankle boots but since launching the blog and discovering activewear we pretty much live in lycra! It's so comfortable and versatile.
Kat: I'm a jumpsuit and top-knot kinda girl, polka dots, leopard print and denim are my go to fabrics!
Certified London: What are the new exercise trends or workout classes you’re embracing IRL?
Kat & Vanessa: London has been HIIT mad for a while so we're embracing LISS (low intensity steady state) at the moment. We found our cortisol levels were at an all-time high from racing around at work, in life and then in the gym, so we're embracing the slower pace of training with lots of walking and low-impact classes like yoga, pilates and barre.
We're also huge fans of fun pop-up events happening in London like Klubyoga where you don glitter and bend to the beat, Voga where you flow and vogue like Eighties divas and Disco Barre where you embrace your inner dancing queen - they're all really fun ways of getting fit while having a laugh with your mates!
Certified London: Tell us the top three places to brunch ATM?
Kat & Vanessa: We're obsessed with Iris and June in Victoria - they're dog-friendly, serve the best coffee and when it comes to food, they put a unique twist on their dishes - have you ever had your avo and poached egg served in a poppadum?! You've gotta check it out.
Over in East London, Red Rooster does a gospel brunch on a Sunday where a choir sing covers of gospel and house tunes while you devour the all-American brunch dishes - heaven!
And for sheer #InstagramGoals it has to be Bourne & Hollingsworth Buildings in Clerkenwell, the interiors are to die for with vintage chairs, tropical fabrics and hanging greenery. They serve up bottomless peach bellinis and a beef brisket hash topped with fried duck egg which will literally take you to foodie heaven!
Certified London: What items do you like best from our latest Certified Collection?
Kat & Vanessa: We're in love with the CT 8000 Runner trainers in burgundy. They looks amazing with navy activewear and are super comfortable both in and outside of the gym!
Certified London: How do you style your Certified outfits?
Kat & Vanessa: With a side helping of SASS! We love the retro logo vibe of the Certified collection and our burgundy trainers come everywhere with us. The cropped hoody is also a fave - we sling it on over a sports bra on the way from yoga to brunch.
Certified London: What are your style-hacks to take you through all the activities in your day?
Vanessa: Living in activewear means there's no excuse to get to the gym, just roll off the sofa and you're good to go! I carry my make-up essentials everywhere - a flick of black eyeliner and red lippy always elevates a look.
Kat: My hack is to get rid of your handbag and invest in a nice big duffle bag of backpack that's big enough for everything. I carry my gym kit, yoga book, keep cup and water bottle so can't be faffing with small bags anymore!
Certified London: What are you listening to on Spotify at the minute - artists or songs or playlists?
Vanessa: I'm listening to a lot of female artists at the moment like Kelela, Solange, Banks, FKA Twiggs and bands like Little Dragon, The Internet. For gym workouts or running, you can't beat a bit of Dua Lipa or Jess Glynne!
Kat: I'm studying for my 200hr yoga teacher training qualification at the moment so I listen to yoga teachers' playlists such as Annie Clarke's. After a long day it's very calming for the nervous system to unwind to a yogic soundtrack.
Certified London: Netflix & Chill - what are you watching?
Vanessa: What aren't we watching! I'm obsessed with Black Mirror so have watched that several times over. I also love all the crime documentaries and dramas, I watched the entire second season of Making a Murderer in one weekend and The Sinner, Narcos, Stranger Things and Power are my other favourites.
Kat: I tune in to The Chef's Table for my foodie fix and love funny shows like Orange is the New Black and The Good Place.
Certified London: What are your top three Instagram-inspo accounts we should be following?
Kat: There's so many inspirational people we follow on Instagram, we could talk about this for days... @hannahrosecluley is my insta-inspo at the moment. She trained to be a yoga teacher then moved to Bali and is basically living the dream. She's big on sustainability, self love and has a no BS attitude which I love!
Vanessa: @youleanmeup is a deaf fitness blogger we know and love for all her work on highlighting accessibility in the fitness world. Go follow her!
We both follow @thefoodmedic because she's totally bossing it in the health and fitness space. Not only is she a qualified doctor and PT, she's got great style and creates amazing recipes. She's our ultimate girl crush!
